Florida was made for outdoor movies
Think about it: we get warm evenings most of the year. The pool is right there. The lanai is already the family's favorite room. An outdoor theater turns your backyard into the neighborhood's favorite place — movies under the stars, the big game by the pool, kids' birthday parties with a 120-inch screen.
Outdoor theaters are simpler than indoor ones in some ways and trickier in others. No walls to hide wires in. Sunlight to fight. Weather to survive. We design for all of it: weatherproof gear, proper brightness for evening viewing, and sound that carries across the yard without blasting the neighbors.
Screens built for the outdoors
Outdoor screens have one job the indoor kind does not: survive Florida. We install fixed-frame screens with weather-resistant materials, or retractable screens that roll away when not in use. Fixed screens give the best picture and are always ready. Retractable screens disappear when the movie is over — great for patios where you do not want a permanent screen.
Screen size for outdoors usually runs big — 100 to 150 inches — because viewing distances are longer. We also plan the screen position against the sun's path: you want the screen facing away from the sunset, and we time the design around when you will actually watch (evening, after the sun drops).
Projectors bright enough for dusk
Outdoor viewing starts at dusk, not full dark — nobody wants to wait until 10pm for the movie to start. That means the projector needs real brightness to punch through twilight. We spec high-lumen projectors for outdoor installs, much brighter than what an indoor theater needs.
We also protect the projector. Weatherproof enclosures with ventilation and heating/cooling keep the projector safe from rain, humidity, and heat — and they keep it permanently mounted and aligned, so movie night starts with one button, not a setup ritual. Portable projector setups are cheaper, but the "set it up every time" friction means they get used twice and shelved.
Sound for the open air
Outdoor sound is a different game. No walls means no reflections helping the sound along — and sound spreading across a yard. We use weatherproof landscape speakers placed around the viewing area, plus a subwoofer designed for outdoors (buried or disguised models exist that are invisible in landscaping).
The goal is even coverage: clear dialogue and full sound at every seat, without cranking it so loud the whole street hears it. We aim speakers at the audience, not the neighbors, and we tune the system for the yard's actual acoustics. Good outdoor sound is directional and controlled.
Built for Florida weather
Everything outdoors in Florida has to survive sun, rain, humidity, and the occasional tropical tantrum. We use marine-grade and outdoor-rated equipment throughout: UV-stable speakers, weatherproof enclosures, corrosion-resistant mounts, and cable rated for outdoor burial. Screens use materials that handle moisture without mildewing.
We also plan for storms. Retractable screens roll up. Projector enclosures are sealed. And we show you the quick storm routine — what to retract, what to cover — so a surprise afternoon storm is a two-minute task, not a disaster.
Lighting and ambiance
The area around the screen needs to be dark enough for the picture but safe enough to walk around. We add low landscape lighting along paths and seating — warm, dim, aimed down — so nobody trips but the screen stays punchy. String lights set the mood for the pre-movie hangout and dim or switch off for showtime. All of it runs from the same simple control as the theater.
Poolside movie nights
The ultimate Orlando setup: screen facing the pool deck, speakers covering the loungers, the game or the movie playing while everyone floats. Poolside theaters are our most requested outdoor layout, and they take specific planning.
Screen placement keeps the picture visible from the pool and the deck seating — usually elevated slightly so swimmers can see over the deck edge. Speakers aim at the seating areas, not across the water (sound over water carries to neighbors). We add a waterproof remote or app control so you can adjust volume without climbing out. And we plan the lighting so the pool's own lights do not wash out the screen — pool light and screen brightness get balanced during calibration.
Safety note we take seriously: all outdoor electrical is GFCI-protected and code-compliant, equipment stays clear of the water, and we follow pool-area electrical clearances to the letter. Fun should never be sketchy.
Used year-round, not just summer
Here is the Florida advantage: outdoor theater season is basically all year. October through April — our "winter" — brings cool dry evenings that are perfect for outdoor movies. Summer brings heat, but evening showtimes after the sun drops work fine, especially with a breeze and the pool nearby.
We design for year-round use: a patio heater or fire pit zone extends the cool months, fans or misters extend the warm months, and the equipment is rated for all of it. The only real downtime is heavy rain — and with a retractable screen and sealed equipment, even a surprise shower is a minor pause, not a disaster. Your cost-per-movie-night drops every month you use it, and in Orlando, that is a lot of months.
The big game, outside
Movies get the romance, but sports drive a lot of outdoor theaters. Sunday football on a 120-inch screen by the pool, with the grill going and friends in the loungers — it beats any sports bar. Fight nights, the World Cup, the Olympics: big events want big screens and a crowd.
Sports viewing has one special requirement: daytime and dusk games. A bright projector and an ambient-light-rejecting screen handle late-afternoon kickoffs that start before full dark. We also set up the audio so commentary stays clear over crowd and pool noise. Tell us which sports matter and we tune the setup for them.
Our process
We visit your yard, look at the viewing area, check the sun's path and the evening light, and talk about how you will use it — movies, sports, parties. You get a written plan with the screen, projector, sound, and mounting spec'd for your space. We install — usually two to four days — wire everything cleanly, weatherproof it all, and calibrate the picture and sound. Then we wait for dusk and show you what your backyard can do.
