Nothing says "home theater" like a projector

There is a moment in every projector install that never gets old. We power it up for the first time, the image snaps into focus at 110 inches, and the homeowner just says "wow." You cannot get that from a TV. A projector turns a wall into a cinema screen, and it changes how a room feels.

But projectors are also the easiest home theater purchase to get wrong. Wrong projector for the room. Wrong screen size for the seating distance. Mounted crooked, so the image is a trapezoid. Set to factory defaults, so the colors are off. We see all of it — usually when we are called in to fix a DIY install. Do it right the first time and a projector is pure magic.

Picking the right projector for your room

Three things decide which projector fits: your room's light, your screen size, and your seating distance. A bright room needs a bright projector — measured in lumens. This is the number one mistake people make: buying a projector rated for a dark theater and putting it in a living room with windows. The picture looks washed out, and no settings menu fixes it.

Resolution matters too. 4K is the standard now, and the difference on a 110-inch screen is real — you sit close enough to see the detail. Throw distance is the third piece: how far the projector sits from the screen. Short-throw projectors work inches from the wall (great for tight rooms); standard projectors mount on the ceiling 10 to 15 feet back. We measure your room and match the projector to it.

Mounting: level, square, and solid

A projector mount looks simple and punishes sloppiness. The projector must be perfectly level and centered on the screen — off by a little and the image is a trapezoid instead of a rectangle. We mount to structure (ceiling joists, not just drywall), run power and HDMI cleanly through the ceiling, and align the image so it fills the screen edge to edge with sharp focus in all four corners.

We also plan for the long term: mounts that allow easy bulb or filter access, cable runs with pull strings so future cable upgrades do not mean opening the ceiling again, and placement that keeps the projector's fan noise away from the seats. Details you never think about until they are wrong.

The screen makes or breaks it

A projector on a bare wall works — and it is the most common thing we upgrade away from. Walls are not flat, not white, and not the right gain. A real screen is engineered: flat, uniform, and coated to reflect light the way your room needs.

In a dark room, a standard white screen is beautiful. In a room with ambient light, an ambient-light-rejecting screen is transformative — it rejects light coming from the sides and top while reflecting the projector's light straight back at you. The picture stays punchy even with the lights on. We demo the difference during the visit so you can see it, not just hear about it. Our projector screen installation page covers screens in full detail.

Calibration: the step everyone skips

Projectors ship with settings designed to look bright on a store shelf — oversaturated colors, crushed blacks, motion smoothing that makes movies look like soap operas. Calibration fixes all of it. We set brightness and contrast for your room's light, dial in color so skin tones look human, and turn off the processing gimmicks that ruin the film look.

The difference between a calibrated and uncalibrated projector is not subtle. It is the difference between "nice big picture" and "that looks like a real movie." Calibration is included in every projector install we do — we do not consider the job done without it.

Living with a projector in Florida

Two Florida realities to plan for. First, light. Our sun is relentless, so light control matters more here than in most markets. Blackout shades, dark wall colors near the screen, and the right screen material make a projector shine even in a Florida home. Second, heat. Projectors put out heat, and Florida attics are already hot — we make sure the mount location has airflow and the projector is not baking.

Short-throw vs. standard projectors

Standard projectors mount on the ceiling 10 to 15 feet from the screen. They are the classic choice — bright, sharp, lots of models to choose from, and the projector stays out of the way. Most dedicated theaters use standard throw.

Short-throw projectors sit just inches from the wall — on a credenza under the screen. They are perfect for rooms where ceiling mounting is hard: concrete ceilings, rooms with fans or beams in the way, or rentals where you cannot open the ceiling. The trade-off: fewer models, higher cost per lumen, and the projector sits in the room where little hands can reach it.

We recommend based on your room, not on trends. Both can look fantastic. The wrong choice is picking before measuring — throw distance math decides, and we do the math during the visit.

Keeping your projector happy for years

Projectors are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. The air filter needs cleaning every few months — Florida dust and humidity clog filters faster than the manual assumes. A clogged filter means a hot projector, and heat shortens lamp life. We show you where the filter is and how to clean it; it takes two minutes.

Lamp-based projectors eventually need a new lamp — typically after thousands of hours. We set the projector to the right brightness mode for your room (not max-brightness torch mode), which stretches lamp life significantly. When the lamp does age out, replacement is a simple swap we can handle.

Laser projectors are the newer option: no lamp to replace, instant on/off, and consistent brightness for tens of thousands of hours. They cost more up front and make sense for heavy-use rooms. We lay out the math honestly — lamp versus laser — based on how much you will actually watch.

Our process

We visit, measure your room, check the light at different times of day if we can, and talk about screen size goals. You get a written estimate with the projector, screen, and mount spec'd for your room. We schedule the install — most projector installs take a day. We mount, wire, align, focus, and calibrate. Then we dim the lights and show you what your room can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Projector or big TV — which should I choose?

For a dedicated dark room, a projector wins — nothing beats 110+ inches for the cinema feel, and it costs far less per inch than a huge TV. For a bright living room, a big TV usually wins — it handles ambient light better. Our projector vs. TV guide compares them head to head, and we give you an honest recommendation for your room during the free visit.

Can you install a projector I already bought?

Yes, if it fits your room. We will tell you honestly during the visit whether your projector matches your room's light and size — sometimes the answer is yes and we just install and calibrate it. Sometimes the honest answer is that a different model would do much better, and we explain why before you spend install money on the wrong unit.

How long do projector bulbs last?

Modern projector lamps typically last thousands of hours — years of normal movie watching. Many newer projectors use laser light sources that last even longer with no bulb to replace. We set the projector to the right brightness mode for your room, which extends lamp life, and we show you how to check lamp hours.

Will a projector work in a room with windows?

It can, with the right plan: blackout shades for serious viewing, an ambient-light-rejecting screen, and a bright enough projector. We assess your room's light honestly — if a projector is a bad fit for your space, we will tell you and talk TV options instead.

Do you mount the projector on the ceiling?

Usually, yes — ceiling mounting keeps it out of the way and out of the light path. We mount to ceiling joists for a rock-solid hold, run all wiring through the ceiling, and align everything precisely. For rooms where ceiling mounting does not work, we design shelf or short-throw alternatives.

What is 4K, and do I need it?

4K means four times the pixels of old HD — on a 100+ inch screen viewed from normal seating distance, the extra detail is clearly visible. It is the current standard and what we recommend for new installs. The content is there too: streaming, Blu-ray, and gaming all offer 4K now.
